Speaking in Spoons:
A Chronically ill Podcast
How We Got Our Start
Speaking in Spoons: A Chronically ill Podcast was started in 2022 by Christina Brookman. She joined with a team of friends who also have disabilities, founding cohosts Nate Straus and Lexi Crow. Speaking in Spoons' goal is to help people with disabilities and their families connect, share stories and learn from each other, along with specialists in the field.
Why Speaking in Spoons?
The "Spoon Theory," an essay written by Christine Miserandin0, has always been a great tool to help explain what living with a chronic illness and/ or disability is like to someone who isn't sick. Ever been told, "But you don't look sick?!" The spoon theory holds special meaning to Christina because her uncle made her a special spoon necklace years ago after she shared it on Facebook. He was recovering from a stroke and connected personally with this essay. Part of his physical therapy was hand stamping text on this spoon necklace, "Though she be but little, she is fierce"
